How to Count Words in a PDF Online

Teachers, editors and clients often ask for a word count even when the file you have is a PDF. Counting manually is slow. An online PDF word counter extracts the text layer and totals words and characters in seconds — as long as the PDF actually contains text.

Fast workflow

Open the free PDF Word Counter, upload your PDF, and review words, characters and pages. Keep the file local: on Free Quick Tools, counting runs in the browser.

  • Prefer a PDF exported from Word, Google Docs or similar (has a text layer)
  • Check the preview snippet to confirm the right content was read
  • Use PDF Page Counter when you only need how many pages exist

Word count vs page count

Page count measures layout length (fonts, margins, images). Word count measures textual length. A visually long PDF can have few words if it is mostly images; a dense text PDF can pack thousands of words into a few pages.

When counts look wrong

Scanned PDFs are often pictures of pages. Without OCR there is no text to count, so the result may be zero. Export again from the original document, or run OCR before counting. Encrypted PDFs may also fail until unlocked with the correct password.
